Sky TV & Broadband – What You Need to Know
Sky provides two main services: TV and Broadband.
These can be used independently — you don’t need have to have Sky Broadband to use Sky TV.
Sky TV will work with any broadband provider, such as F4RN, which offers high–speed fibre broadband.
The minimum speed that Sky TV requires is 25Mbps for a reliable standard-definition experience, though a higher speed of 30Mbps or more is recommended for consistent streaming, especially if you’re watching in Ultra High Definition (UHD) or have multiple devices connected. A stable internet connection is essential for preventing buffering and ensuring the best quality for your viewing.
F4RN offers broadband speeds of 700 – 800 Mbps on a wired broadband connection.
Wi-Fi speeds do often depend on the device itself but speeds of 350 Mbps are available on modern equipment.
Sky Variations
Sky Q
- What it is: a traditional satellite TV service that also uses internet connectivity.
- How it works: It requires a satellite dish installation and a Sky Q set-top box to access content.
- The Sky Q box can connect wirelessly or be plugged in to your broadband connection.
- Recordings of programs can be taken and stored on your Sky Q box
- You can watch on multiple TVs within the home by using smaller multi-room Sky boxes. The multi-room boxes connect via a Sky mesh to the Sky Q box.
Sky Stream
- What is is: A broadband-based streaming service
- How it works: A small set top box connects directly to your TV and wirelessly to your broadband service. This then streams content over your internet connection, eliminating the need for a satellite dish.
- Sky Stream offers a Playlist feature, which acts as a cloud-based bookmark to save programs for later viewing from on-demand services or apps
Sky Glass
- What it is: A smart TV with Sky built in, requiring only a Wi-Fi or wired connection to your broadband.
- How it works: The TV itself serves as a platform to access content, with no separate set-top box or satellite dish needed.
- Sky glass offers a Playlist feature, which acts as a cloud based bookmark to save programs for later viewing from on-demand services or apps.
- Sky Glass can only be watched on a Sky Glass TV; to use in more than one room you also need a Sky Stream box.
Common issues with Sky and broadband
The Sky Q Mini boxes connect to the main Sky Q box using a 5GHz mesh network. This means they don’t connect to your home’s Wi-Fi network to talk to each other. This can sometimes cause confusion when a multiroom box loses its network connection, the broadband Wi-Fi can be blamed.
The Sky mini boxes can also be used as Wi-Fi extenders. Multiple sources of Wi-Fi can lead to “Co Channel Interference” which leads to slower network speeds.
Where possible it is recommended to turn off the Sky repeater network unless it is being used as this prevents possible Co Channel Interference.
Sky Q boxes have limited speed on the wired connection of 95Mbps but the Wi-Fi connection can be up to 195Mbps, both of these should be adequate for any use but it is worth noting the Wi-Fi is faster.
Summary
Sky offers flexible viewing options suited to different setups, whether via satellite or broadband. High-speed internet (like that from F4RN) enhances the streaming experience, especially with modern Sky services like Sky Stream and Sky Glass. Understanding how your Sky equipment connects can help resolve common Wi-Fi issues and optimise your home setup.
